Competition & School Games
Competition is an integral element of the Merton School Sport Partnership and we strive to ensure that there are clear pathways and opportunities for all children in a range of competitive sports.
Our Goals
- To increase participation
- To identify and develop talent
- To ensure consistent local competitions leading to county, regional and national delivery according to the National Competition Framework
- To provide opportunities for all young people to enjoy and compete in sport regardless of ability
MSSP Calendar & Wall Planner
High quality inter school competition and advance planning is key for MSSP and we constantly endeavour to improve existing competition and access for our pupils to take part. Planning and co-ordination for the calendar takes place throughout June/July so that all schools receive a wall planner with all of our borough wide events and dates before the start of the next academic year. Click on the link on the left hand side documents to download these. Schools should book onto all competitions and events on the events page.
Multi Skills
At key stage 1 - 4 we work with our schools to deliver multi skill festivals for all of our pupils. The festivals are learning and fun based and supported by sports leaders. They cover the A, B, Cs of movement (Agility, Balance and Coordination) through a basic skill and games circuit. Pupils get to put their movement skills into practice in a mildly competitive but fun focused environment with the opportunity to evaluate themselves and their peers throughout. Intra School Competition
At MSSP our Sports Coordinators work closely with all schools to help them develop and deliver their intra school competition programme. This is often through an inter house system or similar and feeds into the inter school competition calendar.
The School Games
The School Games is a new exciting approach to competitive sport designed to motivate and enthuse all young people. No matter what their age, talent or disability the School Games is open to all children. With competitions available at intra school, inter school and county/area level there is place for everyone and with the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics fast approaching it is time for everyone to get involved. To find out more information about the school games or to register your school so that you can get involved log onto the Your School Games website and follow the step by step guide.
National Competition Framework
The National Competition Framework is in principle a 'good practice' model for the delivery of competitive sport for young people. The framework has been developed jointly by The Youth Sport Trust, Sport England and the National Council for School Sport collaboratively with a wide range of National Governing Bodies of sport (NGBs) and School Sport Associations. We use this framework as basis for the different sports competitions we hold. As part of their ongoing work with the NGBs the Youth Sports Trust have developed matrices which explain the pathway structure and priority competitions for each of the sports. The also demonstrate the reasoning behind competitions and where the pathways for performers lead to from local level right through to national level. Below are links to the matrices for some key sports.
