Best Team Borough Football Finals

December 8th, 2011

The Borough Best Team Football Finals was held at GOALS on December 8th. The tournament was made up of the top four teams from each cluster round. As the tournament was organised and run by Fulham FC Foundation there was a great prize on offer- to represent Merton in the Fulham tournament.

There was a lot of excitement from the teams as they arrived, as all of them were eager to show how well they could play and they all wanted to win the prize. The competition was to be divided into two competitions after the group stage, with the top two from each group qualifying for the cup competition and the third and fourth placed teams entering into the plate competition.
The group stage was eagerly awaited and there were lots of teams who could have gone through. However, there were three teams that all won their groups without dropping a point, which was very impressive considering the strength of the teams at the tournament. Moving into the knoukout stage of the Cup it was clear that the teams that won all their group games would be favourites to go through. This was true, with Hillcross, St. John Fisher and The Sherwood all winning again.
In the Plate competition it was a much tighter affair with two quarter final games going to penalties. The semi-finals were much more clear-cut with Links and Singlegate winning their games by clear margins. This meant that the final was between these two teams. It was a very close affair with Links coming through as the eventual winners.
In the Cup competition there were some very close games in the quarter finals. Eventually we found the finalists; St. John Fisher and Hillcross. They both won their semi-final games 1-0, setting up and all Raynes Park Cluster final. It was a very close game with very few chances as both teams wanted to make sure that they didn’t concede any goals. As the game went on it opened up a bit and chances were created with both teams going close. Eventually it was St. John Fisher that scored what proved to be the winning goal. This meant that they were crowned as Borough Champions and move through to the next round, representing Merton at a Fulham FC tournament.
