Basketball competitions continued this week with the Year 8/9 boys’ tournament taking place at Canons Leisure Centre. There were six teams entered, with two each from Rutlish, Wimbledon College and Harris Merton.

After four rounds of the competition there were only two teams that had won three of their games; Wimbledon College A and Harris A. This meant that the competition was going to be very close between, although Wimbledon College had narrowly beaten Harris in the first round of the tournament, making it difficult for Harris to overtake them in the table.

The middle of the table was also producing some good basketball with third and fourth position to play for. All of these teams were playing good basketball and it was very close between them. In Round 7 Rutlish A and Harris B produced the most exciting game of the tournament; at full time it was 8-8, which meant a period of extra time. Rutlish took the lead in this and held it for the rest of the period, until Harris scored. The whistle blew just as the ball went through the hoop, triggering another extra period; this time it was golden basket. Very shortly into the period a Harris player scored the winning basket queuing incredible celebrations from both Harris teams.

The result of that game put Harris B and Rutlish A on level points meaning that they had to be separated by goal difference at the end. The final game of the tournament was between Harris B and Wimbledon College A. At this stage of the competition if Harris B won then Harris A would have won the competition. Unfortunately for Harris this was not to be and Wimbledon College A won the tournament.
