Orienteering Links to Club

Thursday 12th February saw the 4th Merton Primary Orienteering festival take place at Wimbledon Park. After fears of more snow or waterlogged fields we were blessed with glorious sunshine for our yr 5 and 6 pupils to compete in.
South London Orienteers and Wayfarers (www.sloweb.org.uk) organised the event for over 90 boys and girls. They were taught how to become young orienteerers and then after practicing on the crazy numbers and star challenges they competed in pairs for their school team.
The event ran throughout the day and we were very fortunate to have the support of Wimbledon College and Ursuline High School sports leaders. They made sure that the pupils could compete in a safe environment and marshalled the course as well as helping them on their way round. We could not have ran this event with out their support!
All the pupils did very well on the course, especially as for most year 5’s it was their first time orienteering. Congratulations must go to Links school who won the event overall. Links have an excellent track record for providing their pupils with opportunities to compete in borough wide and cluster competitions. Their dedicated teachers also run several of the borough events as well so it was great to see them win the orienteering this year.
