Basketball Success at Wimbledon College - 2009/10 Season
Wimbledon College currently run six basketball squads, in each age group, from Year 7 up to the Sixth Form.
During the past season, they have entered a varying number of competitions open to them, from Merton domestic tournaments to National competitions.
Each team trains weekly under the watchful eye of their team coach, ably assisted by the Community basketball coach, Lee.
Every boy who consistently attends training sessions will get a chance to represent his school during the course of the season.
The role of Honour has been quite impressive, mainly due to the hard work and dedication that the boys have submitted to the cause.
Year 7
Taken part in three Surrey based Festivals, where they came out equal top. They also won both the A and B Tournaments at the Merton Schools festival.
Year 8
Have just recently become Surrey Champions, where they successfully won their way through to the semi final via the group stage, beating Richard Challoner in a closely contested Semi Final, and then carried off a convincing win in the Final (48-7) against Archbishop Lanfranc School, Croydon.
They also won the “B” group in the Merton Yr 8/9 Tournament.
Year 9
The season finished well for Year 9,where they won the Surrey League Playoff Final, and having come Runners up in the Surrey League.
They entered the national Competition, where they won through the Merton Round, only to be beaten in the South London group.
The “A” Team won the Merton domestic Tournament.
Year 10
They have become the busiest squad of this year, having a large Surrey League group to contest, and a run Nationally. They have become Runners up in the Surrey League, and nationally went through to represent Merton in the South London Group, where they reached the final. Loosing to a very strong Archbishop Lanfranc side.
Domestically, they won the “B” group in the Merton Yr 10/11 Tournament.
Year 11
A varied season, where they came runners up in the Surrey group, unfortunately not making the Final Fours playoff, and an early exit in the Surrey Cup.
Their season improved as time went by, finishing Winners in the Merton Y 10/11 Tournament, and completing their League programme with an emphatic win ( 3 points) over the strong Archbishop Lanfranc squad ( who were in the latter stages of the National Competition)
Seniors
Senior basketball teams generally are difficult squads to run. Examinations and Course work take a front row seat at this age, and it is usually down to a nucleus of boys that one relies on completing their fixtures.
The Surrey league is well supported, with 10 teams, giving each side nine games.
Wimbledon College came Runners up in the League.
They played their way through to the Final of the Surrey Knockout Cup, to face a strong St Andrews side, previously unbeaten all season. A highly emotionally charged evening at The Kingston Arena was in prospect.
Wimbledon were on top of their game, holding the lead by anything from 3 to 9 points, up until a period inside the third quarter. In the space of five minutes, they lost three of their starting five with injury, which would take the beef out of any team. The remainder of the squad supported well, but were not strong enough to prevent a convincing win by St Andrews.
Thanks
I wish to place a vote of thanks to Messers Panyioutou and McManus who ran their squads, and helped with others. Also to the many boys who volunteered to do table Officiating Duties for our Home matches. I suspect there will be a queue for the same duties this season, when they get to operate the electronic scoreboard !
