Due to popular demand, the annual Merton Primary School Swimming Gala Heats have now been split over 3 heats, with heats 1 & 2 being held on Tuesday 17th May 2016 at Morden Park Pools. 29 primary schools from across the borough have entered for the swimming heats, with 23 of these schools attending heats 1 & 2. Swimmers took part in various events; backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle and relay races. The atmosphere was incredible from start to finish as all schools cheered on their swimmers from the pool side.
Merton Borough U11 Football 2015/2016 results
For the first time the Merton Borough Secondary School Athletics Championships were held at the David Weir Leisure Centre. In another first, the Championships were staged a week earlier than usual – this change in time was felt by all present as snow, rain, wind and sun ensured the conditions changed dramatically on an hourly basis.
On Wednesday 24th March 2016, 15 primary schools from across the borough came to Merton School Sports Partnerships annual Year 5/6 Tri- Golf Competition at Wimbledon Park Golf Club. Tri-Golf is a modified version of golf that uses foam balls, a plastic putter and chipper. The competition is made up of 8 stations; 4 putting and 4 chipping. The objective of the stations is to work as a team to score as many points as you can in 5 minutes. The winning team is the school with the greatest number of points after completing all 8 stations.
The Merton School Sport Partnership hosted their Mitcham & Morden Challenge Run Warm Up event at Morden Recreational Ground on Monday 14th March 2016. 9 primary schools took part in the event which included 4 race categories: year 3, year 4, year 5 and year 6. All the races included both boys and girls as they paced themselves over the 1300m course.
The Merton School Sports Partnership held its inaugural Merton Football Festival on Thursday 3rd March 2016 at Tooting & Mitcham Football Club. Twenty Merton primary schools took part in the Key Stage 2 event which consisted of both mainstream and special schools. The main aim of the event was ‘participation’ and for all the children to play lots of friendly fixtures against other schools and to have fun.
The MSSP Key Steps 2 Year 3/4 Gymnastics Competition took place on Friday 26th February 2016 at Canons Leisure Centre. 17 schools attended the day: Bishop Gilpin, Bond, Dundonald, Garfield, Hatfeild, Joseph Hood, Links, Malmesbury, Merton Park, Pelham, Poplar, St Matthew’s, St Mary’s, St Teresa’s, West Wimbledon, Wimbledon Chase and Wimbledon Park.
The second ever MSSP Key Steps 3 Year 5/6 Gymnastics Competition took place on Friday 5th February 2016 at Canons Leisure Centre. 17 schools attended the day: Abbotsbury, Dundonald, Hatfeild, Haslemere, Joseph Hood, Links, Malmesbury, Merton Park, Pelham, Poplar, Singlegate, St Matthew’s, St Mary’s, St Teresa’s, West Wimbledon, Wimbledon Chase and Wimbledon Park.
MSSP hosted two Sportshall Athletics heats at Canons Leisure Centre on Friday 22nd January 2016. The morning heat consisted of ten schools from the Mitcham and Morden Clusters while the afternoon heat was made up of schools from Raynes Park and Wimbledon. All 20 schools arrived looking ready and raring to go.
A week after a fantastic Girls Football Competition, Merton School Sport Partnership played host to the Merton Best Team Football Competition with the support of the Fulham FC Foundation.
Teams arrived on time and started their preparation with some thorough warm up exercises. From arrival you could tell that today was going to be a great day for sport in Merton once again.
