MSSP Gifted & Talented Festival

On Tuesday 23rd June 2015, the Merton School Sport Partnership hosted the Gifted & Talented Festival at Harris Academy Morden. This eagerly anticipated festival was attended by 105 children who had been invited from primary schools across the borough of Merton. The festival was a celebration of each child’s fantastic sporting achievements throughout the year.

Y5/6 Bowls Competition

On Monday 22 June 2015 the Merton School Sport Partnership, in conjunction with four local bowls clubs (Merton, Merton Park, Wimbledon Park and Mitcham), held their second Primary Schools Bowls Competition. Due to their proximity to the clubs helping to organise the event, three schools were invited to take part: Joseph Hood, Cranmer and Wimbledon Park. Representatives from the clubs went in to train the teams of eight children in advance to give them tips on playing bowls, explain the format of the event and demonstrate the correct bowls etiquette.

Year 3 & 4 Mini Tennis Red Competition

On Wednesday 20th May the stage was set for the Year 3 & 4 Mini Tennis Red Competition at Raynes Park Residents Lawn Tennis Club. Fifteen schools from the borough entered the competition in what was a great day for everyone involved.  The competition began with the group stages and then moved to the finals stages with each team battling it out for their final position.

Secondary Schools Athletics Championships

The annual Merton Secondary Athletics Championships took place on Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th May 2015 at Wimbledon Park Athletics Stadium.

Schools from across the borough had been working hard in and out of lesson time to ensure that the top athletes were selected to represent their schools and be able to perform to the best of their abilities. Results from the track and field would all contribute to schools earning points that would determine overall standings for the Boys, Girls and Mixed trophies.

Merton Borough Tri-Golf Competition

On Wednesday 18th March 2015, 12 primary schools from across the borough came to Merton Schools Sport Partnership inaugural Yr 5/6 Tri-Golf Competition at Wimbledon Park Golf Club. Tri-Golf is a modified version of golf, that uses foam balls, a plastic putter and chipper . The competition is made up of 8 stations; 4 putting and 4 chipping. The objective of the stations is, to work as a team to score as many points as you can in 5 minutes. The winning team is the school with the greatest number of points after completing all 8 stations.

Merton Borough Quicksticks Hockey Competition

The Merton School Sports Partnership held its annual Yr 5/6 Quicksticks Hockey Borough Competition on Friday 13th March 2015 at Wimbledon High’s Sports Field. 16 primary schools from across the borough took part in the event. Quicksticks is a modified version of hockey suitable for primary aged children. There are only 4 players on pitch with no goal keeper, this makes it easier for primary schools to play as accessing a hockey goal keeping kit is a tricky and costly affair.

The MSSP Key Steps 2 Year 3 & 4 Gymnastics Competition took place on Friday 27th February 2015 at Canons Leisure Centre. 18 schools attended the day: Links, St Teresa’s, Merton Park, Bishop Gilpin, Pelham, Garfield, Wimbledon Park, Poplar, Malmesbury, West Wimbledon, The Sherwood, Hollymount, Sacred Heart, St Matthew’s, Hatfeild, William Morris, Haslemere and Dundonald.

MSSP Key Steps 3 Year 5 & 6 Gymnastics Competition

The first ever MSSP Key Steps 3 Year 5 & 6 Gymnastics Competition took place on Friday 30th January 2015 at Canons Leisure Centre. 17 schools attended the day: Links, St Teresa’s, Dundonald, Bishop Gilpin, Pelham ‘A’, Garfield, St Matthew’s, Poplar, Malmesbury, Merton Park, Wimbledon Chase, Sacred Heart, The Sherwood, Hatfeild, Wimbledon Park, Pelham ‘B’ and St Mary’s.

Merton Borough KS2 Boccia Competition

The Merton School Sport Partnership held its annual KS2 Boccia Competition on Friday 29th January 2016 at Canons Leisure Centre, Mitcham. 16 teams took part in the event, including the two Special Schools: Cricket Green and Perseid. The Boccia competition is an inclusive event and aimed at pupils who would not normally take part in sports teams, giving them an opportunity to participate in a competitive environment.
