On Friday 8th March 2019 The MSSP Year 5/6 Tag Rugby Borough Finals took place at Tooting and Mitcham F.C. A total of 16 teams were in attendance, with 4 teams from each of the four Merton Clusters represented. Teams were split into groups of four to play a round robin stage with the teams in their pool.
The weather was thankfully on our side again for the Raynes Park Cluster Y3/4 Tag Rugby Mega Fest that took place in bathing sunshine at Old Ruts RFC on Tuesday 5th March 2019.
The Wimbledon Cluster Year 5/6 Tag Rugby competition kicked off at Dundonald Recreation Ground on Thursday 28th February 2019. It was fantastic to see every school represented and 17 teams in total battling it out to represent Wimbledon at the borough finals. Teams were drawn into four groups with the top two teams progressing into the top eight knockout rounds while the third and fourth placed teams looked to finish as high as possible in their respective knockout rounds.
The Mitcham Cluster Tag Rugby Competition took place at Harris Academy Merton on Wednesday 27th February 2019. Six schools from the cluster attended the event: William Morris, Links, St Thomas, The Sherwood, Beecholme and Stanford. Teams started to get warmed up as soon as they arrived, squeezing in some last minute practice and discussing tactics. Once all schools arrived, they sat down to go through the afternoons schedule and new rules of play.
On Tuesday 26th February 2019 the Raynes Park Cluster Y5/6 Tag Rugby Competition took place. In what was quite unbelievable conditions for this time of year with temperatures reaching nearly 20 degrees, all attending schools were egar to get started and demonstrate their skills. All 11 Raynes Park Cluster Schools were in attendance with St John Fisher and Poplar also bringing a B team with them.
The Morden Cluster Tag Rugby Tournament took place on 14th February 2019. After the frosty conditions of previous weeks, this day was never in doubt as the sunshine surrounded the Astro-turf facilities at Harris Academy Morden.
The Merton School Sport Partnership held its annual Key Steps 2 Year 3/4 Gymnastics Competition on Friday 8th February 2019 at Canons Leisure Centre. Nineteen primary schools from across Merton took part in the event. As part of the Key Steps Gymnastics, all gymnasts compete in three different disciplines throughout the competition: Floor, Vault and Body Management. A team consists of two boys and two girls; all four gymnast’s scores are added together from each discipline to determine their team’s overall score.
The MSSP Key Steps 3 Year 5/6 Gymnastics Competition took place on Friday 1st February 2019 at Canons Leisure Centre. 22 schools attended the day: Bishop Gilpin, Links, Hatfeild, Cranmer, St Thomas, Joseph Hood, Wimbledon Chase, Aragon, Wimbledon Park, St Mary’s, Haslemere, Dundonald, Singlegate, Merton Park, St Teresa’s, Pelham, Hollymount, William Morris, Garfield, Poplar and Malmesbury.
The Merton School Sport Partnership held the annual Borough Boccia Competition on Friday 25th January 2019 at Canons Leisure Centre. This year, a record 30 teams took part eclipsing last year’s 24. The day was spilt over two sessions with 15 teams in the morning and 15 in the afternoon. For each session the teams were split into 3 groups of 5 to battle for their place in the final seeding groups made up of 5 groups of 3 teams – the first group playing for medals.
MSSP hosted the Sportshall Athletics at Canons Leisure Centre on Friday 18th January 2019. Both heats consisted of twelve schools with every team arriving with eighteen athletes (nine boys and nine girls). Each competitor had to take part in two track (relays/races) and two field (throws/jumps) events. All of the scores from each event would contribute to the school’s overall total so it was essential that every individual did their utmost to gain points for their team. All schools arrived looking ready and eager to go.
