BG Netball Winners Nov 18

The sun, rain, wind and finally the sun again didn’t deter our seasoned High 5 Netballers at this year’s Borough Finals. The top four teams from each cluster worked hard in the changing weather conditions throughout the borough finals.

In the group stages we saw some very close results across the courts with the children determined to do their best and work well with their team mates. With half times in every match there were plenty of rotations to ensure players tried their hand across all areas of the court.

The group placings at the end of the first half of the day were as follows:

Group 1

1st Wimbledon Park

2nd St Matthews

3rd Liberty

4th Bond

Group 2

1st Malmesbury

2nd Dundonald

3rd Merton Park

4th St Thomas

Group 3

1st Poplar

2nd Garfield

3rd St Teresa’s

4th Sherwood

Group 4

1st Bishop Gilpin

2nd  Abbotsbury

3rd West Wimbledon

4th Links

After lunch schools continued to played a further three matches to secure their final positions. The top four teams fought out what were very close semi final and final matches. An exciting penalty shootout between Wimbledon Park and Bishop Gilpin saw Wimbledon Park narrowly miss out on a final place.

Poplar worked hard against Wimbledon Park in the 3rd/4th place match but weren’t quite able to match their opposition’s great display of team work down the court and precision shooting.

In the final match St Matthews showed real determination and great play but the Bishop Gilpin team stayed composed and showed great attacking and defending skills and worked so well as a team to win the match and take the Trophy and gold medals.

Final placings were as follows:

  1. Bishop Gilpin
  2. St Matthews
  3. Wimbledon Park
  4. Poplar
  5. Garfield
  6. Malmesbury
  7. Abbotsbury
  8. Dundonald
  9. Liberty
  10. Merton Park
  11. West Wimbledon
  12. St Teresa’s
  13. Bond
  14. Sherwood
  15. Links
  16. St Thomas

Well done to all schools and in particular for the sportsmanship displayed throughout the tournament. The winners of our Ref-Spect award were Malmesbury, huge congratulations to them!

Bishop Gilpin will now go on to represent Merton in the LYG School Games Event in March 2019. Best of luck BG!

A huge thank you also to Ricards Lodge High School and the PE Department for hosting the event and to the Leaders from Ricards for all the help and great officiating through the day.
