The Merton School Sport Partnership held its annual Key Steps 2 Year 3/4 Gymnastics Competition on Friday 24th February 2017 at Canons Leisure Centre. Eighteen primary schools from across Merton took part in the event. As part of the Key Steps Gymnastics, all gymnasts compete in three different disciplines throughout the competition: Floor, Vault and Body Management. A team consists of two boys and two girls; all four gymnast’s scores are added together from each discipline to determine their team’s overall score.

As schools arrived they started to warm up and practice their routines; it was evident that the standard was going to be high this year. In order to judge all the gymnasts fairly the Partnership brought in expert gymnasts to judge each discipline. The judges came from Cheam Gymnastics Club and Heathrow Gymnastics Club; which included Nicole Hibbert a Great Britain Gymnastics Squad gymnast.

During the competition all the gymnasts demonstrated great individual talent and knew their routines off by heart. It was also great to see all the teams encouraging their team mates and applauding others on completion of their routines. This created a positive atmosphere for the gymnasts whilst performing.

The results table was very close and the highest standard the Partnership had seen; however there could only be one winner. Medals were given out to the top three teams of the competition and to the highest scoring individual boys / girls for each discipline.

Congratulations to all teams on their fantastic performances and extra congratulations to Malmesbury on retaining their title, good luck representing Merton at the London Youth Games in July 2017. Also well done to St Mary’s for being awarded the Refspect Award for their sportsmanship towards the other competitors and encouragement towards their teammates.

A big thank you to our guest judges for giving up their time to assist at the competition and thank you to Merton Gymnastics Club and Canons Leisure Centre for letting us use their gymnastic equipment and fantastic facilities.
