The Mitcham Cluster Handball Festival took place on Wednesday 8th March at St Mark’s CofE Academy. Six schools from the cluster attended the day: Links, St Thomas, The Sherwood. Bond, Stanford and St Mark’s. A round robin format was used with each school playing each other once.
Schools arrived early and were ready and raring to play some fantastic handball. This was our first participation event of the year which meant no scores were being recorded and the main focus was on enjoyment and participation.
The first round of games began with Links v Bond and St Thomas of Canterbury v Stanford. Bond got off to a flying start and Links started to warm to the game, both teams managed to score and make some fantastic blocks. Meanwhile William Stanford played at a similar standard playing St Thomas of Canterbury; Stanford found they have an excellent goalkeeper who stopped so many shots throughout the festival.
All teams showed excellent Refspect values throughout the day; congratulating each other, shaking hands and supporting both their team and the opposing team. Our REFSPECT winners today were Stanford. They were positive throughout and demonstrated great sportsmanship and etiquette.
Thank you to all six schools for bringing their very enthusiastic teams and St Mark’s Academy’s sports leaders who grew in confidence throughout the festival, refereeing all the games brilliantly and taking on coaching roles to ensure all six teams were warmed up and remained warm when not playing.
We look forward to seeing you all again next year for some more excellent Handball.
