The Mitcham Cluster Best Team Football Competition took place on Wednesday 7th November at Harris Academy Merton. The nine schools from the cluster who attended the competition were: Lonesome, William Morris, Links, St Mark’s, Stanford, Beecholme, The Sherwood, Bond and St Thomas.

The teams arrived and began to warm themselves up on a cold and wet Wednesday afternoon. The awful weather did not seem to dampen the spirits of all involved as they were all raring to go as soon as they arrived. Teams gathered in to hear the structure of the afternoon and who they would be playing in their first fixture.

All schools were put into two leagues and each league played a round robin format across 3 pitches with the top 2 teams in each group progressing onto the borough finals. The first games kicked off with St Thomas v The Sherwood, Lonesome v William Morris and Bond v St Mark’s. All 3 of the games where very tight with only 3 goals scored across all 3 games. Throughout all of the games there was some excellent football on display.

Each school continued to play excellent football displaying great teamwork. The goal keepers put on an excellent display of acrobatic saves throughout the afternoon!!!

The final positions in each group were as follows:

Group 1

Group 2

1. Lonesome

1. Bond

2. William Morris

2. Stanford

3. St Thomas

3. Beecholme

4. The Sherwood

4. St Mark’s

5. Links

Throughout the afternoon teams were all playing in the spirit of sport. There were lots of handshakes after games, positive support for team-mates and opponents from the side-lines and sporting behaviour demonstrated during games. The boys and girls really embraced the REFSPECT concept. Our REFSPECT winners today were St Mark’s. They showed great sportsmanship throughout the competition, being supportive to both their teammates and others teams competing.

Thank you to Harris Academy Merton for hosting the competition and their brilliant Sports Leaders for refereeing all games with great professionalism and enthusiasm.

Well done to the top four teams: Lonesome, William Morris, Bond and Stanford who will represent Mitcham at the Borough Finals on Friday 7th December – good luck!
