The Mitcham Cluster Girls Football Competition took place on Wednesday 9th November at Harris Academy Merton. 7 schools from the cluster attended the competition: Bond, Gorringe Park, Links, St Mark’s, St Thomas of Canterbury, William Morris and Sherwood.
The teams arrived and began to warm themselves up on a cold Wednesday afternoon. The cold weather couldn’t dampen the school’s spirits. Teams gathered in to hear the structure of the afternoon and who they would be playing in their first fixture.
All schools got the opportunity to play one another in a round robin tournament. The first games kicked off with William Morris v St Thomas, Sherwood v Bond and Gorringe Park v St Mark’s. All three games where very tight with some excellent football on display. St Thomas, Sherwood and Gorringe Park managed to steal the points in the first round of fixtures. Throughout the tournament there were some very close games, with all schools putting in so much effort and showing some real talent.
The final positions were as follows:
2nd St Thomas
4th Gorringe Park
5th St Marks
7th William Morris
Throughout the afternoon teams were all playing in the spirit of sport. There were lots of handshakes after games, positive support for team-mates and opponents from the side-lines and sporting behaviour demonstrated during games. The girls really embraced the REFSPECT concept. Our REFSPECT winners today were St Mark’s. They showed great sportsmanship throughout the competition, being supportive to both their teammates and others teams competing.
Thank you to Harris Academy Merton for hosting the competition and their brilliant Sports Leaders for refereeing all games with great professionalism and enthusiasm.
Well done to the top four teams: Sherwood, St Thomas, Links and Gorringe Park who will represent Mitcham at the Borough Finals on Thursday 24th November – good luck!
