The Mitcham Cluster Hi 5 Netball Competition took place on Wednesday 11th October at Harris Academy Merton. Five schools from the cluster attended the competition: Bond, Links, William Morris, Stanford and St Thomas of Canterbury.
As schools arrived they were faced with strong winds and rain immediately, however this just encouraged schools to warm up quickly, ready for their games as soon as they arrived.
As there were five teams competing, a round robin format was used, meaning all teams played each other once. This got all teams very excited as they knew they had four matches to gain as many points as possible – 3 for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss.
The games kicked off with Links v William Morris and St Thomas of Canterbury v Bond. All four teams took a while to find their feet and remember all the different rules played in netball, however, once they got going it was clear to see they were all on an equal playing field. The game between St Thomas and Bond ended very tightly in a draw, however Links secured their first win of the tournament, with a 1-0 win over William Morris.
The second round saw Links v St Thomas of Canterbury and Stanford v William Morris; again both very closely with Links and Stanford securing the wins with only 1 goal! At this point, it was clear that teams needed to start focusing their efforts on claiming some goals in their games to gain more points.
In round three, Bond took on William Morris and Links played Stanford. Bond and William Morris both had opportunities to steal the game however Bond managed to be successful when shooting and secured the 1-0 win over William Morris. Links and Stanford also finished 1-0 with Links taking the win to carry on their unbeaten run in the competition.
The rain eased off by round four which seemed to make teams more determined and focused to ensure a top four finish! Bond and Stanford both had a win under their belt so this game was definitely going to be close, and that it was finishing with a 0-0 draw. However the other schools were fighting to get goals scored with St Thomas doing just that and securing a 2-0 win over William Morris.
Teams played in the last round of games of the day which was St Thomas v Stanford and Links v Bond. Little did they know Links had already secured 1st place so the fight for 2nd was on. Links managed to get themselves another 1-0 win over Bond, however St Thomas v Stanford ended goalless with a 0-0 draw.
Once the last game had finished teams gathered to find out the final results. With a lot of games ending in draws, the scores were very tight leaving two teams equal on points and goal difference for 2nd and with only a point in it for those finishing in 3rd and 4th. The final results were as follows:
3rd William Morris
4th St Thomas of Canterbury
The Refspect winners were St Thomas of Canterbury they received the most nominations for shaking hands, congratulating other teams and being supportive to their teams. Congratulations!
A special mention to Harris Academy Merton leaders who helped to umpire the matches with great professionalism. Well done!
Thank you to all schools for attending and braving the icy weather! Congratulations to Links for winning the Mitcham Cluster High 5 Netball Competition for the fourth year in a row. Best of luck to teams at the Borough Finals.
