The Mitcham Cluster Tag Rugby Competition took place at St Mark’s Academy on Thursday 15th October 2015. Seven schools from the cluster attended the day: St Thomas, Stanford, Links, St Mark’s, Bond and Beecholme while Sherwood brought two teams.

With the help of the Year 9 Sports Leaders from St Mark’s, all teams started to get warmed up as soon as they arrived, squeezing in some last minute practice and tactics. Once all schools arrived, they got sat down to go through the running of the day.

As there were 8 teams in total, a round robin format was used for the competition, meaning all teams played each other once. This got all teams very excited as they knew they had 7 matches to gain as many points as possible – 3 for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss.

The games kicked off with Beecholme v Bond, Links v St Mark’s, St Thomas v Sherwood A and Stanford v Sherwood B. All teams got stuck in straight from the first whistle and set a great standard to uphold for the rest of the competition. Bond got their competition off to a flying start, beating Beecholme 7-1. Links and St Mark’s had a neck and neck game with St Mark’s clinching a last minute try to win the game 2-1. Sherwood A took their first win of the tournament with a 2-0 win over St Thomas, and Stanford and Sherwood B battled it out in a tense 3-2 victory to Stanford.

The second round saw Stanford take on St Mark’s where Stanford carried on their winning streak to end the game in a 2-0 victory. Links took on Beecholme and although they had great determination, Links were able to score 4 smooth tries against the Beecholme team to win the game 4-0. St Thomas played Bond and both teams played a brilliant game with St Thomas clinching a winning try to end the game in a 1-0 victory. The infamous Sherwood derby came very early on in the competition with both teams determined to win. This was very clear as the battle was immense as Sherwood A took the lead 1-0 within the first few minutes but Sherwood B bounced back straight away to make the score 1-1. The teams then matched each other try for try for the rest of the match taking it right to the final nail biting seconds. Both teams had a sense of relief on their faces when the final whistle blew, ending the game in a 3-3 draw.

The next few rounds saw some teams come into their own with St Thomas winning the rest of the fixtures, with Sherwood A not far behind them. Sherwood B, Stanford and Links were unknowingly fighting for the next two spots to qualify through to the borough finals, with all points counting towards their final score so every try was needed! Meanwhile, St Mark’s, Bond and Beecholme were playing their hearts out at the bottom half of the table fighting for 6th, 7th and 8th places!

With some excellent games played and some tough decisions to be made by the referees, everyone played brilliantly with teams showing fantastic sportsmanship and team spirit throughout the whole competition.

Thank you to the St Mark’s Sports Leaders for some brilliant refereeing and enthusiasm throughout. The final results were as follows:

St Thomas

Sherwood A

Sherwood B

St Marks

Due to 2 Sherwood teams finishing in the top 4, only 1 team could qualify for the borough finals. Therefore, the 4 schools representing Mitcham are: St Thomas, Sherwood, Stanford and Links. Good look guys!
