The Mitcham Cluster Tag Rugby Competition took place at Harris Academy Merton on Wednesday 21st February 2018. Eight schools from the cluster attended the event: Bond, William Morris, Links, Harris Primary, St Thomas, Sherwood and St Marks. Whilst the Harris Academy sports leaders familiarised themselves with the tag rugby rules, teams started to get warmed up as soon as they arrived, squeezing in some last minute practice and discussing tactics. Once all schools arrived, they sat down to go through the afternoons schedule and new rules of play.

As there were 8 teams in total, a round robin format was used for the competition, meaning all teams played each other once. This got all teams very excited as they knew they had 7 matches to gain as many points as possible. Teams got 3 for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss.

The games kicked off with Bond v William Morris, Harris Primary v St Thomas and Sherwood v St Marks. All teams got stuck in straight from the first whistle and set a great standard to uphold for the rest of the competition. The second round saw Sherwood take on William Morris, Bond took on Harris Primary and although Harris Primary showed great determination, Bond managed to steal a 2-0 win thanks to some superb support play. Gorringe played Links and Links were able to clinch the win 2-0 in a well fought match.

Once all teams had played each other the scores were then collated. The final standings proved extremely tight with only goal difference being the decider between the last spot for the borough finals. Congratulations to all competing teams, the final results were as followed:

1st- Sherwood 2nd- Links 3rd- St Thomas 4th- Gorringe Park 5th- Bond 6th- Harris Primary 7th- St Marks 8th- William Morris

The Refspect winners were Gorringe Park they received the most nominations for being respectful, always shaking hands and being positive whilst playing. Congratulations!

A special mention must also be given to the Harris Academy Sports Leaders who refereed the fixtures with professionalism, despite for many of them, this being their first experience of refereeing tag rugby – fantastic effort, well done!

Sherwood, Links, St Thomas and Gorringe Park will be representing the Mitcham cluster for the Tag Rugby borough finals on Friday 2nd March - Good Luck.
