The Mitcham Cluster Tag Rugby Competition took place at St Mark’s Academy on Tuesday 10th January 2017. Eights schools from the cluster attended the event: Beecholme, Bond, Links, Lonesome, St Mark’s, St Thomas, Sherwood, with Gorringe Park bringing two teams. Whilst the St Mark’s sports leaders familiarised themselves with the pitch dimensions, teams started to get warmed up as soon as they arrived, squeezing in some last minute practice and discussing tactics. Once all schools arrived, they sat down to go through the afternoons schedule and new rules of play.
As there were 9 teams in total, a round robin format was used for the competition, meaning all teams played each other once. This got all teams very excited as they knew they had 8 matches to gain as many points as possible. Teams got 3 for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss.
The games kicked off with St Marks v Lonesome, St Thomas v Gorringe park ‘B’ and Links v Sherwood. All teams got stuck in straight from the first whistle and set a great standard to uphold for the rest of the competition. Bond got their competition off to a flying start, beating Gorringe Park ‘B’ 3-0. Sherwood and Links had a tight game ending in a tie. Lastly St Marks took their first win of the tournament with a 2-0 win over Lonesome.
The second round saw Gorringe Park ‘A’ take on Bond which was a very tight game, ending in a hard fought draw. St Marks took on St Thomas and although St Marks showed great determination, St Thomas managed to steal a 2-1 win thanks to some superb support play. Links played Lonesome and clinched their first win of the tournament beating Lonesome 3-1 in a well fought match.
The infamous Gorringe Park derby came very early on in the competition with both teams determined to win. Gorringe Park ‘A’ played some excellent rugby with Gorringe Park ‘B’ competing well however Gorringe Park ‘A’ did enough to come away with a 2-0 win. The next few rounds saw some teams come into their own with St Thomas only being defeated by Gorringe Park ‘A’. With some excellent games played and some tough decisions to be made by the officials, everyone played brilliantly with teams showing fantastic sportsmanship and team spirit throughout the whole competition.
Once all teams had played each other the scores were then collated. The final standings proved extremely tight with only one point separating first, second and third place. Congratulations to all competing teams, the final results were as followed:
1st- St Thomas of Canterbury
5th- Gorringe Park ‘A’
7th- St Marks
9th- Gorringe Park ‘B’
The Refspect winners were Gorringe Park they received the most nominations for being respectful, always shaking hands and being positive whilst playing. Congratulations!
A special mention must also be given to the St Marks Academy Sports Leaders who refereed the fixtures with professionalism, despite for many of them, this being their first experience of refereeing tag rugby – fantastic effort, well done!
St Thomas of Canterbury, Links, Sherwood and Bond will be representing the Mitcham cluster for the Tag Rugby borough finals on Thursday 9th February- Good Luck.
