The Morden Cluster Tag Rugby Tournament took place on 26th February 2020. After the wet and windy conditions of previous weeks, this day was never in doubt as the sunshine surrounded the Astro-turf facilities at Harris Academy Morden.

6 schools from the Morden area competed for a place in the top four and the chance to represent Morden at the borough finals in March. Abbotsbury, Cranmer, Malmesbury, Morden, SS Peter and Paul’s and St. Teresa’s made up the round robin style format. Each team would face the 5 other opponents with all scores recorded to leave the final standings and the top four heading to our Tag Rugby Finals on Friday 6th March 2020 at Tooting and Mitcham FC 4G facilities.

From the very start the tournament did not disappoint. St Teresa’s picked up what would prove to be a valuable victory over Abbotsbury in the early stages whilst there were extremely close draws between Malmesbury v Morden and SS Peter and Paul v Cranmer with the games ending 1-1 and 3-3 respectively. All teams were displaying great energy and determination with some teams excelling in respect and team work. Abbotsbury recorded the highest victory of the day with a 4-0 result whilst Cranmer picked up a well-earned point v Morden with a 1-1 score line.

But it was St. Teresa’s who, having remained unbeaten through the competition, were crowned 2020 Tag Rugby Champions with an impressive 4 wins and 1 draw. Abbotsbury came a very close 2nd, just one point the difference between them and top spot. The battle for 3rd 4th and 5th unbelievably close with teams being separated by try difference. But congratulations to Morden in 3rd and Malmesbury in 4th who squeeze into the finals on 6th March 2020.

 Final positions:

GOLD        St. Teresa’s Q

SILVER      Abbotsbury Q

BRONZE   Morden Q

4th          Malmesbury Q

5th          SS Perter and Paul’s

6th          Cranmer

Congratulations to all players for representing their schools with passion and pride.

Good luck to the top four who progress to the finals and an enormous well done to St. Teresa’s for being voted for the REFSPECT award for showing wonderful sportsmanship and support to other schools throughout the afternoon.

Thank you, on behalf of MSSP, to all teachers and staff for making sure your teams were well prepared and able to participate on the day. Thanks also to Harris Academy for their willingness to help by supporting us with the use of their 3G Astro facility.
