Morden Cluster Tag Rugby 2019

The Morden Cluster Tag Rugby Tournament took place on 14th February 2019. After the frosty conditions of previous weeks, this day was never in doubt as the sunshine surrounded the Astro-turf facilities at Harris Academy Morden.

7 schools from the Morden area competed for a place in the top four and the chance to represent Morden at the borough finals in March. Abbotsbury Benedict, Cranmer, Malmesbury, Morden, SS Peter and Paul’s and St. Teresa’s were divided into 2 groups for the initial stage with each team playing their final round match versus the team from the opposite group in the same position. From the very start the tournament did not disappoint. The first match in Group A between St. Teresa’s and Malmesbury was an end to end battle resulting in 5 tries scored each. A thrilling encounter to watch with some outstanding attacking tactics from both sides. In Group B, Abbotsbury started off with a 2 tries to 0 win and stated their intentions by finishing the group unbeaten heading into the final placings match. Group B’s second place was a much closer contest to settle. It came down to the few remaining minutes in the last fixture between Benedict and Cranmer with a winner-progresses situation. Cranmer managed to hold onto a 3 tries to 2 lead, setting up a 3rd/4th place match up with Malmesbury.

Congratulations to all players for representing their schools with passion and pride.

Good luck to the top four who progress to the finals and an enormous well done to Benedict for being voted for the REFSPECT award for showing wonderful sportsmanship and support to other schools throughout the afternoon.

Thank you, on behalf of MSSP, to all teachers and staff for making sure your teams were well prepared and able to participate on the day. Also to the five year 8 leaders from Harris Academy for their willingness to help and guide the schools during the tournament.

It is refreshing to see young sports leaders being great role models to younger players and reminds us of the importance of hosting competitions, the inclusivity of events and most of all, facilitating participation.
