On Thursday, 24 May 2018, eight schools from the Morden Cluster took part in the Cluster Best Team Kwik Cricket competition. Liberty, Haslemere, St Peter & St Paul’s, Bond, St Teresa’s, Abbotsbury, Singlegate and Malmesbury arrived at Mitcham Cricket Club on a wet and cloudy morning ready and eager to play in the competition.

As schools arrived, they started practicing their bowling, batting and fielding skills, getting themselves prepared for their upcoming games. Once all schools signed in, they gathered in to go through the running of the day and to find out which schools would be playing each other first.

As there were eight teams in the competition, the schools were split into two groups of four where all teams would play three group fixtures. Once the first round began, it was clear to see the teams had been practicing hard for this event.

The group stage games were very tight throughout. The fielding skills and the batting strength of Malmesbury and Abbotsbury allowed them to progress through to the semi-finals after topping their group.

Singlegate and St Teresa’s also showed some outstanding cricketing skills, and were able to finish second in their group which allowed them to go through to the semi-finals where they would face the winners of the opposite group.

Strong performances by Singlegate and Malmesbury in the semi-finals saw them reach the final where it was last year’s overall Merton borough runners up, Malmesbury, who were crowned champions.

The final standings were:

1st- Malmesbury                   5th – Bond

2nd – Singlegate                   6th – St Peter & St Paul

3rd – Abbotsbury                   7th - Haslemere

4th – St Teresa’s                   8th – Liberty

Well done to St Teresa’s for receiving the Refspect award, due to the positive attitudes of the players towards their peers, opponents and umpires.

Thank you to all the schools that took part and to Mitcham Cricket Club for hosting the event. Further thanks must go to the Sports Leaders from Harris Academy Morden for their help officiating.

Congratulations and good luck to the top four teams on qualifying to the borough finals on Friday 8th June at Old Ruts Cricket Club.
