The Merton School Sport Partnership held its annual Morden Cluster Year 5/6 Best Team Kwick Cricket Competition on Thursday 18th May 2017 at Mitcham Cricket Club. Nine teams took part in the round robin event, which gave all teams the best opportunity to qualify for the borough finals.

The day started with glorious sunshine, little did we know the competition would end in floods of rain, this didn’t seem to faze the children though. Throughout the competition, there was some tight matches; Morden narrowly beat Haslemere by 209 runs – 206 runs as they managed to get more wickets, Singlegate just beat Malmesbury 256 runs – 251 runs, despite Malmesbury taking more wickets 3 – 2 and St Peter & St Paul beat Haslemere 236 – 230 runs.

Towards the end of the competition, there was one clear winner, Singlegate were undefeated taking 33 wickets in total. St Teresa’s and Malmesbury drew on points overall both just losing two games each, therefore it went down to who took the most wickets, which resulted in Malmesbury coming second. Congratulations and good luck to the top four teams on qualifying to the borough finals on Friday 9th June 2017 at Old Ruts Cricket Club.

Thank you to all the schools that took part and to Mitcham Cricket Club for hosting the event. In addition, a big thank you to the Harris Academy Morden sports leaders for umpiring and scoring all the matches. Well done to Abbotsbury for recieving the Refspect Award due to the positive attitudes of the players towards their peers and opponents and to the Abbotsbury teacher for his positivity at each match and assisting other teams with tactical advice and knowledge of the rules.
