On Wednesday 12th October the Morden Cluster Girls Football competition took place at Harris Academy Morden School. The teams arrived ready and raring to go. A total of 9 teams representing 8 schools competed in the afternoon event.

Group 1 consisted of Cranmer, St Teresa’s, Haslemere ‘B’, Liberty and SS Peter and Paul. It was Liberty who started strongly as they scored three goals in their opening match to win 3-0. Nothing could separate Cranmer and St Teresa’s as some excellent play and great saves from both goalkeepers meant it remained at 0-0. Excellent defensive play from all teams in this group meant it was extremely tight with positions going to goal difference and even goals scored! The final standings for the group were:

  1. Liberty

  2. St Teresa’s

  3. SS Peter and Paul

  4. Cranmer

  5. Haslemere ‘B’

Group 2 had Malmesbury, Haslemere, Abbotsbury and Benedict all competing for the top two places which guaranteed them entry into the Borough Finals. Malmesbury and Haslemere battled to a 1-1 draw in their first game. What followed was a series of 2-0 victories and 0-0’s which left this group even closer than group 1. So much so that Malmesbury and Haslemere had to do a sudden death penalty shoot-out to see who won the group! They were tied on points, goal difference, goals scored and the head to head was 1-1! The final standings for the group were:

  1. Malmesbury

  2. Haslemere

  3. Abbotsbury

  4. Benedict

Throughout the afternoon teams were all playing in the spirit of sport. There were lots of handshakes after games, positive support for team-mates and opponents from the side-lines and sporting behaviour demonstrated during games. The girls really embraced the REFSPECT concept.

The final round of games saw a battle for final positions within the cluster. Every single game played went to sudden death penalties which was astonishing! Final results were as follows:

  1. Malmesbury

  2. Liberty (REFSPECT winners)

  3. Halsemere

  4. St Teresa’s

  5. Abbotsbury

  6. SS Peter and Paul

  7. Cranmer

  8. Benedict

  9. Haslemere ‘B’

Thank you for everyone for taking part and we wish Malmesbury, Liberty, Haslemere and St Teresa’s all the best in the Borough Finals on Thursday 24th November.   Our REFSPECT winners today were Liberty. They were positive throughout and even when they lost their penalty shoot-out in the final they clapped the opposing team and went to shake their hands. A great demonstration of sportsmanship and etiquette. Well done Liberty.

Thank you to the superb leaders from Harris Academy Morden who refereed the games superbly and made the event run smoothly. They are a real credit to the school.
