The Morden Cluster Girls Football Competition took place on Monday 16th October at Harris Academy, Morden.

As an earie darkness fell upon the nation and the sun could only exude a dim orange glow, all eyes turned towards the Morden cluster year 5 and 6 girls football tournament and the girls certainly did not fail to shine bright!

Played at the Harris Academy Morden’s astro-turf facility under the strange weather after-effects of hurricane Ophelia, 7 schools were determined not to let this phenomenon deter their performance. Abbotsbury, Cranmer, Haslemere, Malmesbury, Morden, SS Peter and Paul’s and St. Teresa’s all came in their colours, ready to compete in the first MSSP football event of the new 2017-18 academic year.

The format was in a round-robin style with each team playing 6 games in total and from the very first kick the crowd could tell it was going to be a very close encounter; many of the first few rounds of matches ending in draws with all sides realising they had everything to play for.

A 2-0 win for Morden over SS Peter and Paul’s did not discourage them and SS Peter and Paul’s came back in the very next game with a confident 3 – 0 victory to show great team spirit!

The whole tournament was so close that it had to be decided on the last match of the day between Haslemere and St. Teresa’s with the winner sure to grab top spot! With all the other schools showing great support near the side-lines, the game finished 1-0; another very close game and this one went the way of Haslemere Primary School! Congratulations to them for winning the tournament and also to Malmesbury – both finishing unbeaten on the day!
