On a sunny Wednesday 14th June 2017 the Morden Cluster Y5/6 Rounder’s Competition took place at Harris Academy Morden. St Teresa’s, Singlegate, Benedict, Cranmer, Malmesbury, Liberty, SS Peter & Paul and Abbotsbury all entered a team.
Schools were split into two groups of four, with the aim to finish in top seed to play the top seed of the other group for 1st or 2nd place. Due to the almost perfect conditions, this made for some fantastic rounders with all schools bowling, bating and fielding well.
Both group 1 and group 2 played some fantastic rounder’s with both Malmesbury and St Teresa’s winning all their fixtures, meaning they would play off for the top spot.
In group 1 Benedict, Cranmer and Singlegate had some very close scoring games with just one rounder between them in many of the games. This came down to the excellent fielding of all teams stopping the opposing team for scoring many rounders. Group 1 finished:
St Teresa’s – 9 points
Cranmer- 6 points
Benedict- 3 points
Singlegate- 0 points
In group 2 Abbotsbury held their own, fielding so well and making it difficult to be beaten by the other teams in their group. Also in group 2 Liberty and SS Peter & Paul played a closely contested game to see who would finish in 3rd position. Group 2 finished:
- Malmesbury- 9 points
- Abbotsbury- 6 points
- SS Peter & Paul- 3 points
- Liberty- 0 points
Singlegate and Liberty played off for 7th & 8th place. Both schools batted and fielding well, considering Liberty were two players short they had a fantastic game however Singlegate managed to beat them taking the 7th spot. SS Peter & Paul and Benedict played off for 5th and 6th place, Benedict fielding so well in this game and stopped SS Peter & Paul from soring many runs. Although SS Peter & Paul batted excellently, it was not enough to clinch 5th spot.
Cranmer & Abbotsbury played for 3rd & 4th place. With three schools from each cluster, attending the borough final this meant the winner of this game would qualify. This was a well-matched game with some brilliant batting and fielding from both teams however, Abbotsbury managed to come out on top with a great batting displayed which helped them seal the win.
Both Malmesbury and St Teresa’s team were well organised and consistent throughout the competition. This proved to be a close match with both teams scoring rounder’s off some huge hits. Both teams had 4 players caught or stumped out. The scores where close, the final game was won with a 1 rounder different (2 ½ to 3 ½). Well done- St Teresa’s! The final standings were:
1st- St Teresa’s
6th- St Peter & Paul
