The Morden Cluster held its annual Year 5/6 Tag Rugby Competition on Wednesday 25th January 2017 at Mitcham Rugby Club. Six schools took part in the round robin event on a very cold and wintery day. All teams turned up enthusiastic and raring to go.

As the competition progressed, it was evident that teams had been practicing their tactics as they were very disciplined in keeping their defensive line strong making it hard for the opposition to attack. Half way through the event, no one could predict the top teams but as the teams gained more confidence and composure a divide between the table emerged. Benedict vs Liberty was a tough match as both teams battled to break the opposition’s defence, it was Liberty that finally found a gap to storm through and score the winning try ending 2 – 0. A high scoring game was between Malmesbury and St Peter & St Paul. Who ever had kick off seemed to run freely past the opposition to score a try. Malmesbury settled down their game and were gaining possession of the ball by pressing high and making the six tackles for a turn over, Malmesbury won 5 – 3.

The winning team was decided on the last game between St Teresa’s vs Abbotsbury, both teams started the last match undefeated. There were some superb defensive structures displayed by both teams but Abbotsbury managed to squeeze through the St Teresa’s defence on two occasions to win 2 – 0. Congratulations to Abbotsbury for becoming Morden Cluster Tag Rugby Champions 2017! Please see below for final positions:
