The Merton Inclusive Football Festival was held at Tooting and Mitcham Football Club on Thursday 16th March 2017. The festival was attended by pupils from 24 schools from around the borough, it was safe to say that everyone was very excited upon arrival.
Despite the event being non-competitive, all teams showed great determination and a large range of football skills throughout the day. There was some outstanding goals scored and some heroic goalkeeping displays.
The fixtures were played in an excellent spirit and it was great to see participants supporting not only their own teammates but also members of opposing teams. With no pressure to qualify, it was great to see every participant play with a smile on their face throughout the day. Schools must be credited on the level of sportsmanship that was on display. This was evident with the wide range of schools that were nominated for the REFSPECT award.
The overall REFSPECT winners were Gorringe Park and Sacred Heart. However, a special mention must go to Callum from Cricket Green, who was nominated for his excellent attitude and brilliant goalkeeping display, Rosa from Links who was nominated for encouraging students from other schools and to Ashley from The Sherwood for being respectful, friendly, helping everyone and never giving up.
