The first ever Merton School Sport Partnership Primary Swimming Gala finals took place on Friday 21st June at Morden Park Swimming Pools.
Two qualifying heats had been held prior to this event with the fastest swimmers in each of the events invited to compete in the finals. The standard of swimming in both the heats was exceptional so we were in for an exciting night of finals!!
The event was held in the evening and organisers were overwhelmed with the number of spectators/supporters who came to watch! There were banners and flags for individuals and teams and once the action got started, the noise inside was deafening creating a fantastic atmosphere.
Before each race the swimmers were introduced the crowds of fans. Some individuals were too nervous to give a wave whilst others soaked in the atmosphere, all experiencing something fantastic.
In the pool the races were superb, the swimmers spurred on every stroke by the screaming fans. Many of the races came down to the final stroke or the swimmer with the longest stretch to the wall. There were individual medals for the top three competitors in each race and also trophies for the winning relay teams.
Congratulations to all swimmers. Just qualifying for the finals is a fantastic achievement and all swimmers performed to their best on the evening.
A special thank you goes to Kath Bennett from Malmesbury Primary school who planned and organised everything and made the event a fantastic success! Thank you also to the young leaders from Rutlish secondary school (who gave up their own time on a Friday evening) and also Morden Pools for providing the venue.
The swimming gala will now be an annual event on the MSSP sport calendar. So swimmers – get practising for next year
