Friday 24th November 2017 saw the top four Year 5/6 girls teams from each cluster battle it out at the Borough finals at Tooting and Mitcham FC. From the outset it was clear that the teams were well prepared, organised on the pitch and confident.
The group stage results were as follows:
- 1st Sherwood
- 2nd Bishop Gilpin
- 3rd West Wimbledon
- 4th Malmesbury
- 1st Merton Park
- 2nd Haslemere
- 3rd Stanford
- 4th Dundonald
- 1st Poplar
- 2nd Pelham
- 3rd St Thomas
- 4th St Teresa’s
- 1st Wimbledon Park
- 2nd Morden
- 3rd St John Fisher
- 4th Links
The next round saw some very closely fought matches with lots of extra time and penalty shoot outs.
As the finals approached the tension began to mount but the girls weren’t phased and continued to perform.
The 3rd and 4th place play off saw Bishop Gilpin beat Sherwood on penalties, it was a great game to watch.
The final was between two undefeated teams, Poplar and Wimbledon Park. The game was nail-biting with excellent organisation, team work, passing and defending from both sides. As time progressed it was difficult to call the winner. After 2 minutes of added time still no goals were in sight so a penalty shoot-out was looking likely.
The girls from both teams remained very composed and took the shoot-out in their stride. With some great shots and goalkeeping the winner finally emerged and Poplar were crowned Borough Champions for 2017.
The etiquette and sportsmanship was fantastic throughout the day. Supporters were positive and the girls were very considerate to each other and the referees. The Ref-Spect Winners were Morden Primary who displayed a great attitude throughout the tournament even after a defeat. Well done Morden Primary!
Rutlish sports leaders did a great job proving to be very confident and capable referees and they kept the event running smoothly. Our thanks go to them and the Rutlish PE Department for their support.
Poplar will now receive 10 pairs of AFC Wimbledon Match Tickets for a game it the new year. Many thanks to AFC for this great prize. Poplar and Wimbledon Park with also represent Merton in either the LYG School Games finals or the Surrey Schools FA Finals.
