Over the past six months players and coaches from Wimbledon Hockey Club have been working closely with a number of primary schools in the Borough of Merton to introduce and develop a high class and inclusive hockey programme for the children of Merton.
The Quick Start Hockey initiative kicked off with assemblies and taster sessions for 2,000 Merton state primary children last term and are now rolling after-school clubs for 8 schools this term with another 10 to 20 hoping to join for the next school year.
The programme has proved extremely popular with take-up spread very evenly between both boys and girls who train and play together. One Head Teacher commented “The after-school club has had excellent feedback with one parent commenting that it was the first school sports activity that their child had really taken to"
Paul Knowles - Head of Quick Start Hockey, said
“Getting Olympic and International players involved has given a real buzz to the programme. The enthusiasm from the boys and girls has been hugely inspiring and we are now planning to expand to meet demand ”
The programme although in its infancy has already unearthed some hidden talent, with Calum Richards from Poplar School being selected at the Merton Schools tournament to join the Wimbledon Hockey Club Academy. In the picture, Calum is receiving his playing shirt from the current GB joint captains - Phil Roper and Ian Sloan. – Well done Calum, a superb achievement! The Quick Start Hockey tournament planned for March 2018 will give another opportunity for Wimbledon Academy talent spotting.
Merton Hockey Club are also getting involved with a similar programme for secondary state schools in Merton. Their extra hockey sessions run on Saturday morning at Harris Morden School.
