The Y5/6 MSSP Raynes Park/Wimbledon Rounder’s Finals took place on a sun drenched Friday 5th July 2019 at Raynes Park High School Playing Fields. With 15 teams representing various schools across the two Clusters, a three group format was played, where every team would play each other in their group, before progressing to a finals group depending on their finishing position after the pool stages.

With a quick briefing and recap of the rules out of the way, all teams raced onto their pitches to get the tournament started, and despite the energy sapping conditions caused by the baking sunshine the quality of rounder’s on display by all schools was absolutely fantastic with some sublime batting skills as well as some pin point accurate bowling and team work in the field.

At the end of the group stages the finishing positions looked as follows:

Group A

  1. St Matthew’s B
  2. West Wimbledon
  3. Aragon
  4. The Priory

Group B

  1. Poplar A
  2. St John Fisher
  3. Hillcross
  4. St Matthew’s A
  5. Dundonald

Group C

  1. Bishop Gilpin
  2. Wimbledon Chase
  3. Sacred Heart
  4. Poplar B
  5. Hollymount

Teams were then regrouped to play a final three matches to determine their overall standings. The top three teams: Poplar A, Bishop Gilpin and St Matthew’s B were arguably the most consistent from the mornings matches and slugged it out against each other for the chance to win the tournament overall. St Matthew’s B fought valiantly against both Poplar A and Bishop Gilpin with some individual batting performances, smashing the ball into the outfield to get a number of rounder’s, however the organisation and reaction speed of the fielders and bowler of their opposition ultimately made the difference in their attempt to secure top spot.

The top two places were therefore contested by Bishop Gilpin and Poplar A and the match between them came down to the wire in a thrilling contest. With 2 balls to go the scores were tied on 5 ½ rounder’s a piece when Bishop Gilpin managed to get the vital rounder on the very last ball to win the match. Huge credit must be given to the children from Poplar A who did everything they could and had it not been for a very unlucky dropped catch due to the sun glaring into the fielders eyes, they could have taken the match due to having less batters out overall.

A huge thank you must go to all schools who attended the tournament with every player giving their absolute all, as well as playing the games with fantastic team spirit and sportsmanship to their competitors. Well done all!   A big thank you must go to Raynes Park High School for the use of their fantastic facilities.

See you all next year!
