MSSP hosted the third and final heat of Sportshall Athletics at Canons Leisure Centre on Friday 19th January 2018. The heat consisted of nine school with every team arriving with 18 athletes (nine boys and nine girls). Each competitor had to take part in two track (relays/races) and two field (throws/jumps) events. All of the scores from each event would contribute to the school’s overall total so it was essential that every individual did their utmost to gain points for their team. All schools arrived looking ready and eager to go.
West Wimbledons speed and agility came to the fore with their girls doing particularly well in the track events, finishing in the top three in every race. The boys from St Teresa’s demonstrated great strength and technique in the Chest Push while St Thomas of Canterbury utilised their runners well in strong performances in the 6 lap Paarlauf. Both the boys and the girls in Hillcross Over/Under Relay teams ran quickly and some powerful efforts in the jumping events backed this up. Bonds boys proved to be a strong all-round team in the track and field, while their girls scored highly in the field. Sacred Heart brought a well-drilled and talented team of who put in impressive performances across all events but saving their highest scores for the two + two lap relay. Many of the field events were dominated by performances from Poplar as their girls did well, however, their boys really stole the show– finishing in the top two in all six field events! Another school with a strong boys team was Hillcross as they regularly picked up big points in all events on the track and the field. Abbotsbury brought a strong sprint team, where they produced their best scores, with the boys winning the 4 x 1 lap relay. Singlegate were always close on the track but they came into their own on the jump events, particularly the vertical jump where they scored their highest points of the day.
The final round of relays brought excitement and energy to the already tense atmosphere. Poplar’s consistency across all disciplines helped them maintain pole position and finish in first place. Impressive track performances with specific attention to detail from the boys and girls earned second place for West Wimbledon while Hillcross recorded particularly high scores in the field for their third place. Abbotsbury were named as Refspect award winners for showing outstanding sporting behaviour and integrity throughout the competition. Well done to all the Abbotsbury pupils, you are a credit to your school.
