The Morden B Team football tournament took place on Monday 5th February 2018 as five schools braved the cold winter winds and battled it out for top spot at the Harris Academy astro-turf facilities.

The competition is a great chance for schools to allow more pupils to experience tournament football as well as those who represent the Borough Final events earlier in the academic year. Schools are permitted a team of up to ten pupils for this annual six-a-side event and the schools this year did not fail to deliver some great moments!

The round-robin style format consisted of squads from Abbotsbury, Cranmer, Liberty, Singlegate and St. Teresa's Primary Schools, with teams playing each other once in ten-minute matches.

There were a few high scoring games with Cranmer getting off to a flying 4-0 start versus Singlegate and then again v Liberty later in the competition. However, teams were often held to draws, noticeably due to some of the goal-keeping heroics from many of those between the posts! A wonderful double save from the Liberty keeper, pushing the ball onto the post and earning his team a point v Singlegate was certainly a moment cherished by the rest of his team and spectators!

The top spot was very close between Abbotsbury and Cranmer with both teams finishing the day on 8 points but it was due to a superior goal difference of +8 that gave Cranmer Primary School the gold medal position and saw them maintain their confident strides on the football field in 2017/18 with silver at the borough finals and champions in the Surrey Cup!

Well done to all schools that participated - especially to the winners of our Refspect award - Singlegate Primary School; particularly for a player's compassion towards an opposition member when hurt, stopping the play and seeing if they were OK. A thoughtful act in the midst of a competitive game is always a heart-warming moment - especially as it was such a cold day! Congratulations!

The final table looks like this:

CRA 8pts +8gd

ABB 8pts +3gd

LIB 5pts -3gd

STT 4pts +1gd

SIN 1pts -9gd
