The Merton School Sport Partnership hosted the Inclusive Cross Country Festival at Morden Park on Friday 15th October 2021.
9 Primary schools took part in the festival that included four race categories: year 3/4 girls, year 3/4 boys, year 5/6 girls and lastly year 5/6 boys. All the racers paced themselves over the 1000m course around the fields next to the Morden Leisure Centre.
After an unfortunate initial postponement due to the rain a few weeks prior, the MSSP team were glad to be able to host the event and the partnership’s first inclusive festival for over a year due to the pandemic in 2020. As the first schools started to arrive, the sun came out and brightened up the course creating an exciting mood and atmosphere for all of the schools competing. The year 3/4 girls stepped up to the line each and were cheered on by their teammates and other schools too - the team spirit was fantastic throughout. The crowd noise that was generated spurred on the runners as they all put in 100% effort to complete each race. There was a lot of promising talent on display. This was demonstrated from those runners who paced themselves all the way up past the pool, along the far straight and back down over the finish line!
Thank you to all the schools that took part in this great event. All schools showed tremendous support for each other and our winner for the REFSPECT award went to St. Teresa’s Primary for their selfless support and help for others during the races. Well done to the 31 participants from St. Teresa’s – you are all a credit to your school.
A huge mentioned to one boy from Bishop Gilpin Primary who carried the flag for his entire school solo by participating in the Year 5/6 race. This takes a great deal of bravery and determination to run with such a willingness and desire to represent. Well done to that young man!
The partnership would now like to encourage all runners to continue their hard work and hope to see their schools competing in the 2022 Challenge Run Competitions taking place in the Spring.
