On Friday 5th November the top four Year 5/6 girls’ teams from each Merton cluster came to battle it out at the Borough finals. Therefore, it was already a fantastic achievement for all those involved to reach this stage. After a short briefing regarding rules, format of the day and most importantly our REFSPECT campaign all teams were ready and eager to go. From the outset it was clear that the teams were well prepared, organised on the pitch and confident.

The group stage results were as follows:

Group A

1st Bishop Gilpin

2nd Hollymount

3rd St Thomas

4th Morden Primary

Group B

1st St Matthews

2nd Liberty

3rd Pelham

4th Beecholme

Group C

1st SSPP

2nd Hillcross

3rd Wimbledon Chase

Group D

1st Wimbledon Park

2nd Hatfeild

3rd St Teresa's

4th Links

The next round saw some very closely fought matches with lots of extra time and penalty shoot outs.

As the finals approached the tension began to mount but the girls weren’t phased and continued to perform.

The 3rd and 4th place play off saw Wimbledon Park ease past Hatfeild 2-0 with two beautifully taken goals, Hatfeild gave everything to get back into the game, but Wimbledon Park were just too strong at the back.

The final was between the two strong and organised teams Bishop Gilpin and St Matthews, who had topped their groups in the group stages in the morning. It began as a cagey fair with the teams cancelling each other out, however, Bishop Gilpin picked up their intensity and effort and scored three quick-fire goals to shatter St Matthews strong defence and claim the Borough Trophy, a wonderful performance the girls, commiserations to a well-deserved runner-up team in St Matthews.

REF-SPECT
The etiquette and sportsmanship was fantastic throughout the day. Supporters were positive and the girls were very considerate to each other and the referees. The Ref-Spect Winners were Bishop Gilpin who displayed a great attitude throughout the tournament even after a defeat. Well done Bishop Gilpin!

Rutlish sports leaders did a great job proving to be very confident and capable referees and they kept the event running smoothly.

Bishop Gilpin and St Matthews will also represent Merton in either the LYG School Games finals or the Surrey Schools FA Finals.

A huge thank you to Tooting & Mitcham FC for hosting and providing such a fantastic facility for the girls to show off their skills.
