On Tuesday 26th November 2019 the Raynes Park Cluster Best Team Football Competition took place. Conditions were less than ideal with driving rain as well as stiff breeze, however this did not deter the teams from displaying some sublime attacking football on the fast surface created by the new astro pitch at Raynes Park High School.

12 teams represented 10 schools from the Cluster, with Hillcross and Poplar Primary also bringing a B team to the competition. Teams were split into two groups of 6 teams where every team would play each other in their group before one final fixture for the top three teams in each group to finalise their overall standings.

During the group stages the football displayed by all teams in attendance was of real quality and a notable step up from last year’s competition. Teams demonstrated real organisation and communication in defence, and worked hard to push the ball up field to create plenty of scoring opportunities for their strikers with goals coming from all angles.

Along with some high quality football the level of sportsmanship and respect between schools was fantastic and this helped to create a really positive and enjoyable atmosphere for players to demonstrate their skills.

After the group stages a series of final matches were played to determine the overall winners of the completion, as well as this year’s Raynes Park Cluster representatives that would go on to the Best Team Borough Finals on Friday 6th December. The contest for third place was contested by Hillcross and Hatfeild Primary. The game was equally balanced for long periods of the match but it was eventually Hillcross who broke down Hatfeilds resolute defence and grabbed the decisive goal to take the 3rd place position. The final was contested by two teams Sacred Heart and St Matthew’s Primary who both demonstrated unbelievable consistency throughout the tournament, and this was clearly evident by their water tight defence as well as their ability to create plenty of scoring opportunities. The game was evenly matched, but it was eventually Sacred Heart who managed to break down the defence to score the vital winning goal. Commiserations to St Matthew’s who played superbly throughout the tournament.

Congratulations to Sacred Heart, St Matthew’s, Hillcross and Hatfeild who all go on to represent the Raynes Park Cluster at next Friday’s Borough Finals. Good luck all!

A special mention must also go to our Refspect winners Poplar who received the most votes from all competing teams in regards to the level of sportsmanship they demonstrated during the competition and respect to their fellow opponents and referees.

A big than you must also go to the Raynes Park Sports Leaders who all did a superb job at refereeing the matches. Thank you guys!
