On Tuesday 25th February 2020, the Raynes Park Cluster Y5/6 Tag Rugby Competition took place at Old Ruts RFC. 13 teams were in attendance and split across 2 groups. A round robin format was used for the group stages and then the top 4 teams in each group would play one final game to determine the overall standings and therefore determine who would be crowned Tag Rugby Cluster Champions for 2020.

With the weather forecast looking ominous for the afternoon, a quick briefing was provided before teams could begin their first round of fixtures across the four pitches. Matches began at lightning speed with some superb tries being scored across all of the pitches. What was really pleasing to see was the players ability to move the ball to space quickly, as well as some individual brilliance and magical footwork to get themselves away from the ominous defensive line.

Credit to all schools who really demonstrated their intent to attack with an average of 3 tries being scored in each of the group stage matches. With the weather beginning to close in at the latter stages, a brief interlude was given to players and officials to refuel, before the final round of games for the top 4 teams in each group were played.

The battle for 7th place was contested between Merton Park and St John Fisher. Both of these teams had demonstrated some real quality during the group matches and this was evident in this final game with some sublime tries being scored. At the end of normal time with the rain and wind beginning to hammer down the score was tied at 3 tries each and therefore it was decided that the teams couldn’t be separated so both teams finished a deserved 7th place.

The match for 5th place was almost a carbon copy of the previous match with both Hillcross and Sacred Heart A both finishing the match again 3 tries all. Again the teams couldn’t be separated and therefore were both awarded a joint 5th place finish.

St Matthew’s stormed into 3rd place with a dominant 5-2 victory over an equally impressive Aragon side. Both teams had been gaining momentum through the group stages, but it was St Matthew’s who managed to piece their best performance together for this final game and secured a commanding win.

The final was contested by two of the most consistent teams in the competition. Going into this game, Poplar A had not lost a single game and Hollymount were right behind them with only losing one match by a single try. However, in the final Poplar A were ruthlessly clinical and converted every scoring chance they were given to beat a very well organised Hollymount team 5-2. Both teams however should be very proud of their efforts in getting to the final.

Congratulations to Poplar A, Hollymount, Aragon and St Matthew’s who will all go on to represent the Raynes Park Cluster at the Tag Rugby Borough Finals at Tooting and Mitcham F.C on Friday 6th February.

A special mention must also go to our Refspect winners, Aragon Primary who demonstrated some outstanding sportsmanship throughout the tournament, well done guys!

A huge thankyou must also go to the Secondary sports leaders from Rutlish School who refereed the matches well. Thank you, boys!

Until next year…
