The Morden Cluster Tag Rugby Tournament took place on 11th November 2021. This event in 2020 was one of our last before schools had to close but this year it was never in doubt as the sunshine surrounded the Astro-turf facilities at Harris Academy Morden.

6 schools arrived with 8 teams from the Morden and Mitcham areas to compete for a place in the top four and the chance to represent Morden at the borough finals at the end of the month. Abbotsbury, Cranmer, Malmesbury, Morden, SS Peter and Paul’s and St. Teresa’s made up 2 groups that would lead to a final placings fixture for each squad. Each team would face the 3 other opponents in their group with all scores recorded to leave a final game versus the equivalent placed team from the other group.

It was St. Teresa’s who, having remained unbeaten through the competition, were crowned 2021 Tag Rugby Champions with an impressive added time victory over SS Peter and Pauls by 2 tries to 1. The battle for 3rd went to Malmesbury with a 5 tries to 0 score over Morden who should still be very proud of their achievements, finishing in 4th place and making to the borough finals along with the top 3 schools. Abbotsbury and Cranmer finished in joint 5 with a close, try-less game but the fixture of the day was between SSPP B and St. Teresa’s B for 7th place, purely because of the positive atmosphere and support created by both teams and their team mates on the side-lines. SSPP B managed to score a decisive try late on in the game to secure the win, sending the supporters into rapturous cheer!

Well done and thank you to all 8 teams for participating and congratulations to Morden Primary for being voted REFSPECT winners 2021 for showing wonderful sportsmanship and support to other schools throughout the afternoon.
